RetroFan magazine

“The crazy, cool culture we grew up with” is the tagline for RetroFan magazine, a brilliant bi-monthly eloquently edited by Michael Eury, distinctively designed by Scott Saavedra, and perfectly published by TwoMorrows Publishing of Raleigh, North Carolina. (I thought I’d get my Stan Lee on.) RetroFan generally focuses on the Sixties-Seventies-Eighties period, but they mix it up every now and then.

I joined RetroFan as a regular columnist with issue #20 (May 2022). It’s been a blast and, not for nuthin’, it feels great to still be in print (and in Barnes & Noble, no less) during the age of “Who reads anymore?”

Anyhoo, following are the issues I’m in — I also wrote about Elvira as a one-shot for RetroFan #2 — and the topics covered. Excelsior! (There I go again.)

From left: RetroFan #2 (Elvira); RetroFan #20 (Moe Howard‘s final years); RetroFan #21 (Julie Newmar); RetroFan #22 (“Beach Party” movies); and RetroFan #23 (“Creature From the Black Lagoon”).

From left: RetroFan #24 (“Leave It to Beaver”); RetroFan #25 (Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis comic books of the ’60s); RetroFan #26 (monster movies of Mexico); RetroFan #27 (teenage monster movies); and RetroFan #28 (the British Invasion).

From left: RetroFan #29 (wacky robots of the ’60s); RetroFan #30 (Florence Henderson); RetroFan #31 (“Howdy Doody”); RetroFan #32 (David Cassidy); and RetroFan #33 (when pop-culture characters like Batman, Popeye and Sherlock Holmes fought the Axis powers during World War II).

From left: RetroFan #34 (Tiny Tim); RetroFan #35 (John Astin); RetroFan #36 (Stefanie Powers); RetroFan #37 (freaky Frankensteins); and RetroFan #38 (“Jesus Christ Superstar”).

Note: Some of the above issues are still in pre-orders. (I haven’t even written all of ’em yet!) For reliable updates, visit TwoMorrows’ RetroFan page.

Post script

At first, I planned on doing the snappy little graphic below for every issue, with snappy copy beneath ’em. Alas, it got to be way too much work. But I ain’t throwin’ away what I done! So please enjoy the following impotent gestures …

The fourth installment of my RetroFan magazine column, Voger’s Vault of Vintage Varieties, is all about the Creature from the Black Lagoon — his origins, his three films, his memorabilia and memories from movie players Julie Adams, Ricou Browning, Ben Chapman and Lori Nelson. TwoMorrows Publishing’s bimonthly RetroFan is a bona fide print magazine edited by Michael Eury, which celebrates “the crazy, cool culture we grew up.” Find it at Barnes & Noble, comic shops — support brick-and-mortar, yo! — or order it online HERE. (Digital editions are also available, natch.)

The third installment of my new column for RetroFan magazine, Voger’s Vault of Vintage Varieties, focuses on Beach Culture of the 1960s, especially the “Beach Party” movies starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello.
