Koneful’s theremin scare-a-oke

Comic-book artist, thereminist and Edward-Van-Sloan-grave-visitor Mike Koneful, the guy with the Phillies cap nailed to his head, gave a theremin demonstration at venerable Groovy Graveyard in that Jersey Shore hipster mecca, Asbury Park.

Mike is shown above summoning inspiration at the theremin. The free event took place on Saturday Nov. 1, 2025 … not long after I scored a box of Frankenberry for $1.74 at the Watchung ShopRite! (Nov. 1 is the happiest day of the year for monster cereal nerds.)

Chris (above), a crazy-talented keyboardist based in Philly, supplied otherworldly accompaniment on his Nord Electro 5.

Groovy Graveyard proprietor Eric Krause, always quick with a turn of phrase, billed the event as a “Halloween Hangover.”

Above are some of the attendees who accepted Mike’s invitation to come up and try their luck at making music. (Groovy Graveyard proprietor Eric is at bottom right.)

P.S.: Just for laughs, below is a video of the song “Fear” from the “One Step Beyond” TV soundtrack album. Composed and conducted by Harry Lubin, the song is my favorite theremin track. The instrument is used sparingly; “Fear” is a gorgeous mix of foreboding stings, horns, and vocals. Check it out:
